The Lower Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (LMRFWCO) is located in Tupelo, MS.
The office is co-located with the Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery.
The LMRFWCO seeks an intern for fisheries related work.
The intern will assist the LMRFWCO field lead in activities including efforts for management and control of invasive carps in the Tennessee River, Lower Mississippi River, and the Arkansas/Red/White Rivers Subbasins.
The biologist will work closely with state partners and other USFWS offices to assist with implementation of studies for management, control and evaluation of such efforts.
Other activities include monitoring and evaluation of rare and common species, particularly as related to restoration projects or stocking efforts.
Biologist will assist with habitat restoration activities for the benefit of native species in the Southeast Region.
Biologist will work with field lead to employ a variety of fisheries sampling techniques and gears.
Biologist will be responsible for gear maintenance and preparing for field activities.
Other duties include: data entry and assimilation, assistance with report writing, equipment maintenance, and assistance with other natural resource conservation activities in the region.
Project Location: Tupelo, Mississippi Program Dates: March 4, 2024 - November 17, 2024 Hours: M-F, 7am – 3:30pm with flexibility depending on the day's activities.
Members serve approximately 40 hours a week for a period of 37 weeks.
Members must achieve a minimum of 1200 hours of service within 37 weeks.
Specific weekly position schedules may vary depending on the needs of the site.
Members should be prepared to be away from duty station up to two weeks for field sampling or other required duties.
Responsibilities Field Investigations Percentage of Time: 60% Work with supervisor and/or senior biologist(s) in performing multiple actions: Assists with biological field investigations, primarily related to invasive carp.
Investigations include, but are not limited to, gear effectiveness testing, early detection, deterrent effectiveness research.
Other field investigations may include large river and/or stream sampling for native species, including rare or at-risk species.
Duties may include barrier assessments to aid in identifying habitat restoration opportunities.
assisting with hatchery brood stock collections, assessments of hatchery production activities, and assisting with state agency priority sampling.
Intern should be prepared to be away from duty station up to two weeks at a time, although most field sampling will be conducted during a typical 5-day work week.
Intern should be in good physical condition, with the ability to lift objects, pull nets, and withstand potentially harsh environmental conditions.
Duties also include preparation of gear prior to and disinfection of gear upon conclusion of field activities.
Laboratory/Office/Station Duties Percentage of Time: 30% Laboratory work may include processing of samples from field work and working with various laboratory equipment.
Office responsibilities include administrative duties, data entry and management, basic reporting.
Station duties may include grounds and equipment maintenance, and assistance with activities associated with the office complex.
Miscellaneous Percentage of Time: 10% Responds to written, telephone, and in-person inquiries.
Assists LMRFWCO staff with other clerical duties.
Member Qualifications (Essential Functions) Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member Be a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States Must be at least 18 years or older Local candidates only Have a high school diploma or equivalent or actively working to obtain one; Be willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks; Ability to pass SCA's AmeriCorps criminal history background check.

It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check.
Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
